What is this type of credit card about?

In order to encourage you to pay with your credit card, the banks would propose you fidelity programs. This is, as you pay, you accumulate fidelity bonus on the card, typically 1% or 2%, which can be used with a wide network of merchants. However, banks may have agreements with some networks which means that the bonus you accumulate may have a different value than with merchants outside the network. What are the benefits and disadvantages?
